Cathay Pacific's The Pier First Class Lounge Grand Reopening

Cathay Pacific is one of the leading carriers in the world and the winner of Skytrax's Best Airline Award in 2014. Based in Hong Kong, they are a member of the oneworld airline alliance. In addition to having a premium in-flight product, CX has a fantastic set of lounges in Hong Kong International Airport, as well as around the world.

In Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific operates six lounges, The Pier being one of them. Along with the Wing (business, first), these are the only two oneworld lounge spaces in HKIA (HKG) featuring a dedicated First Class section. This is a fantastic addition to Cathay's amazing lounges in Hong Kong, and is a new space for oneworld First Class passengers and Emerald status holders to experience. To accommodate the lounge closure, a separate area in the business class section of The Pier had previously been roped up for First Class passengers. The updated lounge space is 2,031 square meters and accommodates up to 261 passengers at once.

The new design of the First Class section of the Pier reflects Cathay's recent brand refresh, embracing the slogan "Life Well Travelled". The brand refresh was embarked upon in 2014, where Cathay Pacific's logo was retouched and other design elements were incorporated in their overall branding. The new lounge aesthetic is part of this redesign. The Pier shares similar styles to their other recently updated partner lounges in Tokyo Haneda, Manila, and Bangkok airports. Unlike The Wing, which was designed by Cathay's previous lounge designers Foster + Partners, the new lounge look is much more subdued.

Cathay Pacific partnered with London-based Studioilse for their current lounge development and design. The Pier lounge is designed in a similar concept to a contemporary apartment. It aims to allow passengers, who may have just gotten off a tiring long-haul flight, to relax, focusing on their well-being. Sensory elements such as lighting and acoustics are subdued, and natural materials are used in the construction of the lounge. The goal is to create a residential environment for the traveler. Materials like bronze and limestone are used to project this, along with natural plant life. The lounge is also using real furniture pieces, as opposed to the generic lounge chairs that are often seen in other lounges.

A cool design feature of the furniture is the pull-out power sockets, allowing you to easily charge your electronic devices.

The Pier First Class Lounge New Features

The newest addition to The Pier are private relaxation rooms, featuring padded daybeds overlooking the runway. This must be immensely appealing to the aviation geek. There are eight of these in the lounge, each with adjustable lighting, heavy curtains for privacy, as well as a mirror and a reading light. The passenger occupying these pods will be able to adjust the settings to suit their needs, whether they want to rest before their flight, or just gaze out onto the tarmac.

Continuing on with the focus on relaxation and well being, The Pier has also added complementary foot massages, and neck and shoulder massages upon request. There are three private booths in The Pier where the traveler can benefit from this service. This is the first time these features have been offered in Cathay Pacific lounges, and is a welcome addition. This feature elevates The Pier to the growing number of premium first class lounges that offer equivalent spa and massage services.

This is all part of the new Retreat area in The Pier. In addition to the new relaxation area and daybed suites, The Pier features 14 showers furnished with limestone and timber. Cathay Pacific hopes these will allow travelers to depart and arrive in better shape.

Dining, as an important lounge amenity, is also not forgotten. The Dining Room in the Pier accommodates up to 100 people at once, offering an á la carte menu only. This is different from the dining area in The Wing, which features both a buffet as well as a select á la carte menu. Similar to other lounges operating the majority of the day, there are three separate services offered - breakfast, lunch, and dinner, depending on the time of day. All seats in the Dining Room offer table service.

The Pantry is the main area for those who are looking for "grab and go" food, with the menu changing throughout the day.

A full-service bar with a wide selection of wines and cocktails is also available in a similar atmosphere to a pre-dinner drinks at a fine dining restaurant.

Finally, for workaholics, the Bureau contains six iMac computers for web browsing, offering an atmosphere similar to a home office. The Library is a comfortable and quiet place for reading and relaxing.

The other new innovation in The Pier lounge is the introduction of Cathay Pacific's new fragrance. The new scent is a blend of lavender, green tea, jasmine, and and bamboo, and was designed to characterize the four key pillars of Cathay Pacific's new brand ethos - "contemporary Asian, heartfelt warmth, considered simplicity, and the joy of discovery." This move emulates many high-end luxury hotels which develop their own scent for use in their property. Cathay Pacific will be using this scent in the future in other lounges as well.
