Delta SkyMiles: The Ultimate Guide

SkyMiles is the official frequent flyer program of Delta Air Lines, one of the largest airlines, and according to Forbes Magazine, the most admired airline in the world. Originally created in 1981 as the "Delta Air Lines Frequent Flyer Program", this program has been rewarding loyal Delta Air Lines passengers for over 30 years, offering complimentary miles for every eligible transaction that they make with Delta or one of Delta's many partners. These miles can then be exchanged for a diverse array of intriguing rewards, including complimentary airline tickets, flight cabin upgrades, luxury product offerings, and more.

Given Delta Air Lines' large volume of flights out of US cities like Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Salt Lake City, and New York, residents of these cities and their metro areas may benefit especially from becoming a member of the SkyMiles program. Delta Air Lines itself also has relatively broad coverage worldwide, operating over 5,400 flights per day to over 300 destinations in over 60 countries, and this doesn't even take into account their partner airlines.

As a SkyMiles member, you'll earn miles for qualifying flights with Delta, Delta Connection, Delta Shuttle, and Delta's partner airlines, both within and outside of the SkyTeam alliance. You'll also earn miles with hotel stays, everyday purchases with Delta Air Lines credit cards from American Express, and more.

As a gesture of gratitude from Delta to their valued customers, SkyMiles is one of a handful of frequent flyer programs where miles do not expire.

Getting Started

To get started on your journey to earning thousands, maybe even millions of SkyMiles, the first step is enrolling in the program here. As with other frequent flyer programs, registration and enrollment is free of charge.

Earning SkyMiles

Now that we've gotten past the first step, there are a mind-boggling number of different ways to earn Delta SkyMiles. Before we get started, we should note that there's a distinction between normal, everyday SkyMiles and Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs). Regular SkyMiles are those that you can utilize to redeem award tickets and other prizes, while MQMs are utilized solely to determine your qualification for Medallion elite status tiers within the SkyMiles program, which provide a number of extra benefits not available to general SkyMiles members. For now, we'll focus on the former and come back to MQMs later on.

Fly On Delta

It certainly goes without saying that the most intuitive way to earn SkyMiles is flying on Delta Air Lines. When flying on Delta, SkyMiles are earned based on the total ticket price of a flight (base fare and carrier imposed surcharges, excluding government imposed taxes and fees) for Delta marketed-and-operated flights. A maximum of 75,000 SkyMiles can be earned on a single ticket.

When booking a flight on Delta, the number of miles you can earn per dollar as a SkyMiles member ranges from 5 to 13. SkyMiles members that use a Delta SkyMiles Credit Card to book their flight will receive a bonus of 2 additional miles per dollar. In addition, as you progress up the status tier rankings, you'll receive more miles per dollar spent. See the chart below for more detailed summary.

SkyMiles StatusMiles Per DollarAdditional Miles Per Dollar With SkyMiles Credit CardTotal Miles Per Dollar With SkyMiles Credit Card
General SkyMiles Member527
Silver Medallion729
Gold Medallion8210
Platinum Medallion9211
Diamond Medallion11213

Tip: When making your flight reservation, give your SkyMiles number and use your name as it appears on your SkyMiles membership card to make sure you are properly credited. If you have forgotten to do so, it may not be too late to make a request for your mileage credit.

Exception Fares

If you are flying Delta on an exception fare, also referred to as a specialty or unpublished fare, you may earn miles at a modified rate, based on the percentage of distance flown as determined by the paid fare class rather than on a per-dollar revenue basis. Exception fares are often purchased through a specialized agent, third party, or as part of an all-inclusive package that also contains air transportation and lodging. Examples of exception fares include bulk fares, consolidator fares, cruise fares, vacation packages, including Delta Vacations packages, discounted or inclusive tour packages, and other tickets where the fare is not disclosed.

Earning On Partner Marketed Flights

You can also earn SkyMiles when traveling on flights marketed by one of Delta's many partner airlines. For more detailed information and a full list of these partners, please refer to the following page.

Partner marketed flights ticketed by Delta will earn regular SkyMiles based on ticket price, with a maximum ceiling of 75,000 miles per ticket, much like the scenario of flying on Delta itself. In contrast, partner marketed flights that are not ticketed by Delta earn SkyMiles based on the percentage of distance flown as determined by the fare class paid.

For partner marketed flights, SkyMiles members will earn varying amounts of miles depending on the specific carrier. Partner carriers are categorized into one of four distinct groups. Flying with partners in Group 1 will typically yield the largest number of miles, while flying with those in Group 4 will yield fewer. Be sure to refer to the specific partner page for the exact earning ratios and formulas that apply to each airline.

Book A Vacation

Maybe you've been working a bit harder than usual, and you're somewhat burnt out. If both conditions apply to you, that might mean that it's the perfect time for a vacation. If you want to earn SkyMiles while you're at it, book with a SkyMiles travel partner.

Everyday Purchases

Of course, you won't have to travel to some fancy, far away place without your car to reap the rewards of SkyMiles. You can earn SkyMiles even through participation in normal, everyday activities, like running your errands, paying the bills, and eating out once in a while. Take in all the different possibilities here.

A sample of some of the retail outlets include the Biscoff Store,, and, as well as a large number of well-known, ubiquitous brand names through the SkyMiles shopping portal: the Apple Store, Macy's, OfficeDepot, and so on.

If you join the SkyMiles Dining program, you'll be eligible to earn up to 5 miles per dollar spent for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and much more at over 11,000 restaurants, bars, and clubs across the US.

If you're a customer of one of select group of electric, gas, and utility companies, you'll be able to earn SkyMiles by simply paying your monthly bill. It doesn't get much easier than that.

Open A Fidelity Brokerage Account

If you are looking to open a non-retirement Fidelity brokerage account, you'll be able to earn miles for funding a new account. Here's the earnings breakdown:

  • $25,000 = 15,000 miles
  • $50,000 = 25,000 miles
  • $100,000 = 50,000 miles

If you're ahead of the curve and already have a Fidelity Brokerage Account, you can earn miles by adding to your existing funds.

Hotel Partners

When you stay with the following hotel partners, you'll be eligible to earn SkyMiles for your next award flight (specific terms and conditions vary for earning with each hotel partner).

Ground Transportation

Book a ride or rent a car with these companies to earn additional SkyMiles towards your next award flight.

Credit Cards

Delta SkyMiles credit cards are a great way to earn extra SkyMiles. With a US-issued Delta personal credit card or business credit card from American Express, you'll earn 2 miles for every dollar spent on Delta Air Lines purchases and 1 mile per dollar spent on all other purchases. If that's not enough to entice you to sign up for one of these cards, they also offer a number of bonus miles and Medallion Qualification Miles for the welcome bonus and for reaching certain thresholds (varies depending on the card).

If you live outside of the US, SkyMiles earning credit cards are also available for residents of Germany, Mexico, Canada, China, Guam, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.

Buy, Gift, Transfer, or Donate Miles

If you're only a couple thousand miles away from claiming that long-awaited award ticket, there's no need to fret. Don't wait any further - purchase the rest and book your dream vacation today.

If you have a friend that's in this exact situation, you can lend a helping hand by gifting or transferring some miles over to their account to help them reach the magic number. That's what friends are for, yes?

And if you're feeling especially altruistic and philanthropic today, you can also donate your SkyMiles to help the less fortunate through the SkyWish program.

Convert Partner Points to SkyMiles

Here's another way to round up some additional points so that you can book your award flight. If you're a member of an eligible hotel, credit card, or car rental loyalty program, you may be able to convert your points into SkyMiles, though the transfer ratios may vary.

Audience Rewards Partnership

If you're a member of both Audience Rewards, Broadway's official rewards program, and SkyMiles, you'll be able to earn SkyMiles for eligible ticket purchases for Broadway shows. Conversely, once you have collected enough miles, you can also redeem them to attend Broadway shows.

Crossover Rewards

If you are a member of both the Delta Air Lines SkyMiles and Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty programs, you'll be able to link your SkyMiles and SPG accounts to maximize the rewards that you earn. On top of the Starpoints that you'll normally earn as a SPG member, you'll also earn one bonus SkyMile for every dollar spent on eligible room rates at Starwood hotels and resorts worldwide. To maintain symmetry, you'll earn one Starpoint for every dollar spent on eligible Delta flights as an SPG Gold or Platinum elite member in addition to the miles that you would ordinarily earn as a SkyMiles member.

If you're a member of one of the higher tiers in either program, you'll be able to take advantage of a number of additional perks through this crossover promotion. While staying at a Starwood resort, Diamond and Platinum Medallion members will have access to the following privileges:

  • 4PM Late Checkout
  • Access To The SPG Elite Check-In Line
  • Complimentary In-Room Internet Access
  • Upgrades To Enhanced Rooms At Check-In

And of course, as an SPG Platinum member flying on Delta, you'll have access to:

  • Priority Check-In
  • Priority Boarding
  • Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades
  • Free First Checked Bag

It's getting twice the bang for your buck.

Liquidating Your SkyMiles

Now that you've collected a hefty stash of SkyMiles, there are a number of ways for you to use them for your benefit. This includes redeeming your miles for free air travel on Delta and participating partner airlines, cashing them in for cabin upgrades, trading in for items at the SkyMiles marketplace, redeeming for newspapers or magazines, and more.

Award Flights

With SkyMiles, you can book an award ticket on Delta or any of their partners. Please note, however, that these reward flights are only redeemable through or a Delta Air Lines ticket agent, either on the phone or in person.

If you'd like to make changes to your award itinerary, be sure to keep in mind that changes to your departure airport, arrival airport, route, date, and time are permitted, as long as the mileage remains the same and the changes are made at least 72 hours prior to departure.

Unlike most other major carriers, Delta Air Lines no longer publishes static award charts. Instead, they have provided a new awards calendar for the express purpose of making it easier to search for flights. Their search engine's expanded capabilities and calendar offers a more flexible and accurate view of award prices so that you can get the best deals.

Upgrade With Miles

Another way to spend your SkyMiles is for a paid upgrade.

Within North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and the northern portion of South America (Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela), mileage upgrade awards may be used to upgrade on published Main Cabin fares booked in Y, B, M, S, H, Q, K, L, U, or T class.

For all other international markets, mileage upgrade awards on Delta-marketed and operated flights can be utilized to upgrade on published Main Cabin fares booked in Y, B, M, S, H, Q, or K class.

For flights marketed and/or operated by Air France/KLM, you may use mileage upgrade awards for a one-class upgrade on published fares booked in Y, B, or M class. For more information regarding Air France/KLM mileage upgrades, please contact a SkyMiles representative.

Vacation Deals

Ready to go on vacation? With the Miles To Go program from Delta Vacations, you can use your miles to pay for a portion of the trip. Whether you are traveling to Las Vegas, Waikiki, or even Australia for that next getaway, apply your miles to offset a part of the cost of your flights, hotel, rental car, and other services.

SkyMiles Experiences

SkyMiles Experiences are like no other. Once you have a relatively large number of SkyMiles sitting in your vault, it's time to decide whether you would like to redeem them for once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. According to Delta, these are incredible experiences, exclusive merchandise, and VIP access to events you can't get anywhere else, including front row seats at sporting or cultural events, the chance to mingle with celebrities, and exclusive resort stays. Intrigued? You should be.

SkyMiles Elite Status Program

The SkyMiles program can be subdivided into two categories: basic SkyMiles membership and Medallion elite membership. By default, if you've just enrolled in the SkyMiles program and have not flown yet, you're in the first category. Once you have enough of a combination of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) in a given calendar year to qualify for at least Silver Medallion status, you'll have passed into the realm of the latter category.

Medallion status can be earned through flights flown and partner activity between January 1st and December 31st of the previous year. For example, the qualification period for the 2016 Medallion program is January 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2015.

Medallion Qualification Miles

When you fly with Delta, you'll earn Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), which are different and separate from the regular SkyMiles that we described earlier. The only purpose of MQMs is that they are used as one of three measurements to figure out whether you qualify for a certain elite tier. The other two measurements are Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs). Unlike regular SkyMiles, which are awarded for every dollar you spend, MQMs are calculated based on the distance that you've flown.

The following are the minimum MQM thresholds required to reach each status tier:

  • 25,000 for Silver Medallion status
  • 50,000 for Gold Medallion status
  • 75,000 for Platinum Medallion status
  • 125,000 for Diamond Medallion status

Subject to a 500 MQM minimum, MQMs are earned when flying with Delta Air Lines according to the following formula:

"(corresponding percentage for fare class)" x "(distance flown)".

There are the corresponding percentages for eligible earning fare classes:

  • 200% for F and J
  • 150% for P, A, G, C, D, I, Z, Y, and B
  • 100% for M, S, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X, V, W, and E

The earnings formula for partner airlines may vary.

Medallion Qualification Segments

Status can also be earned with Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) instead of MQMs. All paid fares that are eligible to earn MQMs will count towards MQSs. The minimum MQS thresholds are the following:

  • 30 segments for Silver Medallion status
  • 60 segments for Gold Medallion status
  • 100 segments for Platinum Medallion status
  • 140 segments for Diamond Medallion status

In addition to meeting the MQMs or MQSs requirement, you'll have to meet the thresholds for MQDs, as well.

Medallion Qualification Dollars

Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) measure annual spending on Delta Air Lines flights, and is the third criteria used to determine whether you qualify for Medallion status, along with either MQMs or MQSs (Note: The MQDs requirement applies to US-based members only). The following MQDs requirement apply:

  • $3,000 for Silver Medallion status
  • $6,000 for Gold Medallion status
  • $9,000 for Platinum Medallion status
  • $15,000 for Diamond Medallion status

For those with a Delta SkyMiles credit card from American Express, this requirement is not set in stone. If you make at least $25,000 in eligible purchases during the qualification year, the MQDs requirement will be waived entirely.

When you make a purchase and fly on Delta, you'll receive MQDs for the ticket base fare and carrier imposed surcharges. Taxes and government imposed fees are not included. MQDs are also earned for Delta Comfort+, Preferred Seating, and a portion of some Delta Vacations purchases related to airfare. In addition, spending on flights with certain partner airlines (Group 1, 2, and 3 partners) that are also ticketed through Delta will count towards MQDs, as will certain specialty packages like bulk, consolidated, or other vacation packages. MQDs earned when traveling on select partner marketed flights not ticketed through Delta and travel on exception fares will be calculated using a different formula: one fifth of base miles flown plus, if applicable, any class bonus miles earned on your itinerary.

Award, free, barter, and other tickets that are not eligible for mileage accrual will not earn MQDs. If you decide to purchase your fare through the Points with Miles program, which allows you to purchase a ticket with a combination of miles and currency, you'll earn MQDs for the portion of the base fare and carrier imposed surcharges remaining and paid in currency after miles are applied to the total price. Other ancillary revenue does not count towards MQDs.

Although MQMs can roll over if you earn more than the required threshold for your Medallion status, MQDs, the American Express MQDs waiver, and MQSs do not. If you received a complimentary or gifted Medallion status, your MQMs will be ineligible for rollover unless you've earned more MQMs and MQDs than the normal gifted status requirement.

Medallion Program Benefits

The Medallion elite membership group is divided into four tiers:

  • Silver Medallion
  • Gold Medallion
  • Platinum Medallion
  • Diamond Medallion

The above list is in ascending order based on prestige and level of benefits offered. A top secret tier is also available - find out more here.

One benefit, among many, of having Medallion status is that it entitles you to unlimited complimentary upgrades on most published Delta Air Lines economy class fares and certain Delta codeshares in North America (subject to availability). In addition, if first or business class seats are not available, you'll be able to take advantage of preferred coach seating in the Economy Comfort section of the plane.

Medallion Bonus Miles

The benefits keep on rolling in. As a Medallion member, you'll receive bonus non-Medallion Qualification SkyMiles for every qualifying flight.

Note: To receive the Medallion mileage bonus, you must earn Medallion status through either meeting the required thresholds for MQMs or MQSs and MQDs. If you receive complimentary Medallion status, you are not eligible to receive this bonus unless you receive it through the Million Miler program or the Choice Benefits gifted Medallion status (both of which we'll get back to in a moment).

Reservation Benefits

Here are some benefits that you'll get as a Medallion member when you book your flight:

  • Priority Waitlist Status - You'll receive priority waitlist status when your preferred class of service is not available on a purchased ticket.

The new departure time must be on same day as the originally scheduled departure.
